The problem is that there's about a gazillion handheld barcode scanners 
 out there, although most are just a different label around a small 
 selection of chipsets (Weltrend etc.). I'd recommend buying one with USB
 connection and about 80mm scan width (so no "pen"-style), they cost
 under $50 at ebay or amazon, and usually Just Work.
