[Backgroundrb-devel] how does backgroundrb allocate memory to a worker?

In the Rails environment, does backgroundrb start a separate process (equal
to a mongrel instance) for each worker?  Is there any optimization possible?

My Rails app is rather large and starting backgroundrb consumes too much
memory for 4 workers.
