From mghaught at gmail.com Fri Jul 9 12:38:33 2010 From: mghaught at gmail.com (Marty Haught) Date: Fri, 9 Jul 2010 10:38:33 -0600 Subject: [Boulder Ruby Group] BRG - July Meeting - Jul 20th Message-ID: It's been a busy summer for me as I juggled planning mountain.rb, dealing with changes with Boulder Ruby and everything else I do. For Boulder Ruby, we're having our July meeting on the 20th at 7pm at Collective Intellect's new location. Unfortunately, their conference room is smaller than the old location which means we can't have as large of a gathering. This means we need to find a new home for our future meetings. If any of you know of a good spot near downtown Boulder that can host up to 30 people and allow for a projector, please email me offlist. As for our July meeting, Justin Smestad will preview his talk ?Selling MongoDB? (he?ll be giving this at a Mongo conference in Seattle later in the month). Additionally, it is likely we?ll be treated to a bonus session covering the realities of ruby payment libraries, merchant gateways and credit card processing. Also, I don't have any talks scheduled for August and beyond. Who's up for presenting on something concerning Ruby? It could be a case study, new library you're using or some general Ruby programming topic. I'd love to see some new presenters in the area step up. If you're willing, email me offlist. We also have a fun opportunity the following week. Jim Weirich (of Rake, Builder + fame) will be in town. He's going to be presenting at Derailed on Wednesday the 28th down in Denver so you may want to make the drive to catch that. I am entertaining setting up a social night with Jim at some local hang out for those that want to share a drink with him while he's in the area. I am still looking at possible dates and locations. Any suggestions on a good spot? I will post to the list again once things have been figured out. The main update is that the sponsorship prospectus is available. If you know any Ruby/tech shops in the area that would be interested in becoming a sponsor, pass this on: http://mountainrb.com/sponsors. Thanks. One of the main themes for the conference is "community" and I can't think of a better way to build community than to open your home to a stranger. The program would consist of locals (probably in Boulder but if some Denver folks want to participate that would be great as well) opening up their spare rooms to people traveling to Boulder for the conference. If Denver folks do volunteer, we'll have to figure how the "out of towners" are going to easily get to Boulder so any ideas around that would be welcome as well. It would be very similar to the program that they did for RailsConf2010 ( http://bmoreonrails.org/stay-with-a-local/). If there is enough interest (because without spare rooms there isn't a program), I will work on setting up a section of the mountainrb.com site to handle registration for out of town guests, reusing the code that they used for RailsConf2010 (http://github.com/jtrupiano/stay_with_a_local). As for our location, Everlater and Gnip are hosting the meeting in their 16th and Pearl space. This should be familiar to our regulars as this was the former space of Collective Intellect. Everlater is even bringing some ice cold beer to celebrate having the group ?move in?. How cool is that? Please use the doors off Pearl (east of 16th/Pearl). Directions are below. It should be a good time so I hope to see you all there. Cheers, Marty http://boulderruby.org Directions: Gnip/Everlater 1610 Pearl St Boulder, CO 80302 Use the Pearl St entrance and head upstairs. The door is just between Foolish Craigs and Aji and to the east of the NE corner of 16th and Pearl. You can simply come by and hang out with your Boulder Ruby fellows and chat with Jim. You're also welcome to just bring your laptop and some code you want to share or work on with others. Many experienced Rubyists will be on hand in case you have some questions or would like to have your code looked over. There will be some refreshments on hand and if I can arrange a beverage sponsor, there will be drinks. Jim will not be doing a formal presentation. For that, you should head to Derailed on Wednesday the 28th down in Denver. Check the Derailed list for details. Tuesday should be fun so I encourage all of you to swing by and hang out. Cheers, Marty Haught http://boulderruby.org Location dojo4 is located at 2030 17th St just off Pearl in Boulder, Colorado.
