Bring your own laptop and join the Foraker Labs crew on the second Thursday each month for free beer, pizza, and hacking. http://rubyonbeer.com Our next meeting is NEXT THURSDAY, March 10th, starting at 5:00PM at our office: Foraker Labs 4775 Walnut Street, Suite 200 Boulder, Colorado We'll likely have a couple of projects we'll be hacking on, but feel free to bring your own project or just come and pair up on a code kata or two. And while we obviously love all things Ruby and Rails, we're really more interested in fellowship and learning new things. So don't be afraid to drop in if you're working in a different technology! Need more information? Got questions? Drop us a line at rubyonbeer at foraker.com. Planning on coming? Of course you are! Let us know by signing up at Plancast: http://plancast.com/p/44pu I look forward to seeing you there! Tired of working for social media start ups that have no revenue plan? Want to work for a stable company with a proven business model? Without losing the feel of a small, agile team? Want to write software that contributes to solving our energy problems? Do you want to help make the smart grid actually smart? Comverge is hiring four Rails developers with a variety of skills and experience levels. These people should be comfortable working across all tiers of a web app. Heavy javascript (jQuery based) on the front all the way back to MySQL in the database layer. Ruby is the primary language we use, but there is also a reasonable amount of iOS work and the beginnings of an Erlang effort. Neither of those skills are required for these positions, but rather a differentiator. As a developer you should be: - comfortable with git - somewhat obsessed with TDD or BDD - predisposed to pair programming - spurred to action when the build breaks - self motivated to refactor and make improvements We build software that allows utilities to curtail load on the electrical grid so that they can meet demand without building more power plants. So this puts us squarely in the Smart Grid...Green Energy space. If the idea of writing software that controls devices in the real world instead of simply updating another social network page excites you...then we should definitely talk. Comverge is the undisputed leader in Residential Demand Response and working hard this year to take that title in the Commercial and Industrial space. We have over 3500 megawatts of power under management and have grown our revenues 38% annually over the last 5 years. We have built the industry leading platform for doing Intelligent Energy Management, IntelliSOURCE. Come join one the most ambitious and challenging Rails projects in existence. Jeremy Hinegardner will give a talk on the Hadoop Ecosystem. He will cover the various projects under the Apache Hadoop umbrella and how they all interrelate. I have not scheduled anyone else after Jeremy's talk so there will be an opening for anyone that has something short to share with the group. Here's the meeting link: http://boulderruby.org/meetings/2011/03/13/march-2011/ Also, it was brought to my attention that for a long time no meeting dates were live on the site. That was an oversight on my part as the meetings weren't 'published'. I've fixed it now and made April/May's dates visible. I haven't fully booked either of these meetings yet so if you're interested in presently please let me know. On another bit of group business, there has been some requests to move to mailing list off RubyForge to Google groups. I am fine with this move but I'd be interested in hearing pro/cons to doing it. Unless there's a really good reason I'll move the list over. First, we're moving to a new location. Future meetings will be in the Pivotal Labs office at 17th and Pearl above Ted's Montana grill. Everlater has moved out of the Gnip office and is now sharing space with Pivotal Labs. They will remain the official hosts of the meeting. For our April meeting, April 19th, we'll celebrate with food and beer. Second, our May meeting will correspond with "Startup Week":http://boulderstartupweek.com/. As part of that we would like to show out of town guests all the potential places they could work for. If you're looking to hire some talent please contact me off list. The goal would be to have each company looking to be present at some of the gatherings during that week. Finally, our aging website needs to be redone. One person commented to me recently that they thought the group wasn't meeting anymore. The site can be simplified and really needs a new design. If anyone is interested on helping me with this, please contact me off list. This could be a great portfolio piece for those cutting their teeth with either Ruby or web development.
