The week before the meeting, we will ask again who is coming so we have some idea of how many sandwiches to order. See you on October 3! I am still an entry level ruby/rails programmer. And this year I'm starting a new course here called "Open Source Innovatief" which is basically Ruby on Rails with a sauce of Source Control, Agile development, Team work and well, the things you need to know but won't normally teach you in schools. Actually I also needed a reason to throw PHP out :). It's core course material includes of course "Agile Web Development with Rails" ... hopefully with some of my personal notes if I ever get there :) Any suggestions on rails which should really, really be included in a "Rails course" are of course welcome. Also, I know Kortijk is not the most popular place in Belgium but if you are looking for a location in West-Flanders where you can organize _some_ meetings, I will gladly ask arround here for a place. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... It all depends on whether the course will be one or two semesters, but here are some things i find very useful in everyday Rails coding: ? REST and how Rails has integrated it ? Automated testing of code (test driven development might be a bit too much, but writing tests should be part of the big picture) ? Ruby Mixins by making a simple Rails plugin ? Since you are including source control etc, you could conclude the lessons with capistrano deployment May I also suggest the podcasts at railscasts.com? They talk about common problems and how to solve them and can provide a good source of inspiration. Best regards. The address is Business Centre Zennevallei, Bergensesteenweg 709, 1600 Sint-Pieters-Leeuw. The program is as follows: * 18h30 : Doors. Drinks are provided * 19h00 : Welcome * 19h15 : Introduction of participants (who, what, why, ...) * 19h30 : Discussion of practical aspects of BRUG (when, how, ...) * 19h45 : Presentation on "Metaprogramming in Ruby" * 20h30 : Sandwiches * 21h00 : End of meeting If there is enough interest, the meeting can be continued in a local caf? ;-) For practical reasons, I would like to ask everyone who is attending to send me an email in private (replying to this message sends it to the mailing list instead of just me; that's OK, there is just no reason to flood everyone with these messages). Please include any special dietary requirements (vegetarian, allergies, ...) and if you are coming by train. The closest train station is Lot, but Halle has better connections so preferably you should get off there and then we can come and pick you up. If you come by train to Halle, please include your arrival time in your email so we can coordinate our "taxi service". Of course, you are welcome to attend even if you do not let me know; we will order some extra sandwiches but we cannot guarantee that every unexpected guest gets one. At http://www.xaop.com/pages/contact, you can find a map of the location. It is a google map, so you can easily plan your route. Note that the arrow is slightly off; the correct location is the small white T-shaped building on on the other end of the turn (same side of the road) in the satellite view. It is located between Hof Ten Brukom and Mercedes Truck Center. A (less than ideal) route description can be found here: http://www.bczennevallei.be/content/?lang=en&module=liggingsplan. I already planned on teaching cap and the needed Linux skills to get it up an running. Writing tests is definitely a part of the course. I haven't really tought about Mixins and rails plugins, but I'll have a look at it. Also, We have 4 project weeks as we call them where at least one team of 5 students will have to work in rails on a predefined project in which some teachers pretend to be a customer. Welcome to the BRUG! I like to think the power of RoR is not only the speed at which a site can be built, but the supported methods of doing so. The whole concept of Xtreme Programming, with TDD and Pair Programming might be interesting, together with Behaviour Driven Development (with rspec). The methodology is often more important then the language itself, and I think RoR is a good language to teach this. "Good Programming" is (in my book) more important then exact Rails syntax, since the knowledge of the MVC, BDD or XP can be exported to other languages. Just my 2 cents. I'm still thinking about a small project that gives them the change to work on it in small teams. At the moment I'm working on a example project for them, so i can guide them. Every week we will add some new feature. Also, not many other courses look into new innovations on the web so I also feel I should add some not ruby specific things like the use of microformats, Website as a service with REST, openid ... some "cool" thing so to say, but more as the sugar ontop You are definitely right about teaching skill that can be exported to other languages (and not only languages). The more non-technical people call them soft-skills :) But it's really difficult to test for those. I think our best chance of seeing if someone is ready to be released in the wild is through the "project weeks" where we follow their progress and how they interact with us and with the members of their team.... but you won't see that kind of evaluation on their final piece of paper ... Just The Number I have in my hand a bunch of people that if trained properly might do some good in the future and not only able to follow but also to lead. Officially you are welcome from 18h30 onward which gives you a margin in which to arrive (traffic can be unpredictable) and a chance to grab a drink and talk to other attendees. We will be preparing the room before 18h30, so if you're somewhat earlier you can always check if someone's there. * If you can't make it by 19h, you are welcome to drop by later, as long as you don't barge in and completely disturb the meeting. Let me know if you expect to be late though. * The Business Centre has plenty of parking space in the evening when offices are empty. You needn't mind the signs indicating the company that some parking spots belongs to. I'm very happy to see that a Ruby user group in Belgium is emerging. I'm a self employed webdeveloper living and working in Gent. I know Ruby through Ruby On Rails, as probably the most members of this list :-) I'm hooked to Ruby, RoR and the beautiful code since I saw that impressive screencast where they build a blog in 15 minutes. Since then, which is about 1,5 years ago (Rails 0.6.2 - if I remember correct), I've started working with Ruby On Rails. Most of my "coding gigs" are now in RoR, which I am very grateful for. It's a great initiative to start BRUG and I hope to see you all on the first meeting. However, I won't be able to join you guys (are there any women in BRUG?) at 7, but hopefully in time to see the presentation. I hope this is no problem.
