There are a couple of others lurking on the mailing list, but we haven't seen much of them at the meetings. Since there are only 3 of us that actively attend it we generally manage to get together ever two or three months. It'd be neat to see if DHH would be interested in doing a meeting with us. I'm sure there would be a crowd of people who would be interested in meeting him and talking about Ruby. -- John Long Chad Fowler wrote: > On Sat, 5 Mar 2005 03:59:55 +0900, pat eyler wrote: > >>I see that there's no Chicago meetup group listed at ruby.meetup.com, >>but I did find a chicago group mailing list archive. I think I am the one who is confused. Looking over the original e-mail it looks like we are talking about either April 23 or 26th. On March 5 John Long started a Chicago Area meetup at http://ruby.meetup.com/55/ (currently with 7 members) and I started another Chicago-City meetup at http://ruby.meetup.com/56/ (currently with 2 members). I am not planning to start another e-mail list at this point. DHH's visit to Chicago is a great opportunity and we need to get organized for that but there are some basic questions for us to discuss: 1) What kind of meeting do we want? How many people can we host? 2) Where? I know that almost al the members of this list are in the suburbs, but having the meeting in Chicago-the-City can be considered too and it would eventually appeal to a bigger crowd. 2) When? We need to set a time, confirm with DHH and then make it public. 3) How? Specially how are we going to promote this meeting? We have ony 4 weeks. Can we have an IRC meeting this week to discuss these and other relevant topics? Any other ideas? Suggstions? Currently we are looking at meeting Saturday, April 23rd possibly at a Giordano's or in a conference room. David has indicated that his preference is to meet downtown. Including David and yourself there are at least 6 people who will probably attend. I'm thinking it will be pretty easy to get more, but wonder if it would be best to keep the number less than 12 or so. E-mail me at anything at johnwlong.com and we can swap phone numbers to discuss it in more detail. I'm definately interested in any help you can give in coordinating this. -- John Long http://wiseheartdesign.com Quoting chicagogroup-members-list@rubyforge.org: > Hi All, > > Well, the 'Building Basecamp' Workshop in Chicago is scheduled (and sold > out) for Friday, April 22, David Heinemier has expressed interest in > doing a meeting in Chicago on Saturday, April23 and Chad Fowler is > tentatively plannig to be here too. > > On March 5 John Long started a Chicago Area meetup at > http://ruby.meetup.com/55/ (currently with 7 members) and I started > another Chicago-City meetup at http://ruby.meetup.com/56/ (currently > with 2 members). It's got room for up to about 10-12 people in a room that has couches. I should note that it's six floors up, and I doubt the elevator attendant will be working at that time. :-) So if someone has an option they prefer, no one's feelings will be hurt. -- Ryan Platte From chicagogroup-members-list at rubyforge.org Thu Mar 31 14:30:11 2005 From: chicagogroup-members-list at rubyforge.org (chicagogroup-members-list@rubyforge.org) Date: Thu Mar 31 14:21:09 2005 Subject: [Chicago Area Ruby Group] introduction Message-ID: <1d4775d694aaf23609435e3df5bdf8a0@hark.org> Hello everyone! I'd just like to quickly introduce myself to the list, since it is rather small and low-volume. My name is Jason Foreman, and I live in Schaumburg. I also work in Schaumburg as a Java developer. Sometime in January I found Ruby on Rails, and subsequently the Ruby language. I thought little of it until early this month, when I attended the NoFluffJustStuff conference in Milwaukee where just about every speaker had something to say about it. Since then I've been trying to absorb as much Ruby related material as possible and fit it into my work and leisure activities where I can. I would enjoy attending one of the upcoming meetings with other Chicago area Ruby developers to see in what ways you've used the language and its associated technologies. There seem to be two separate groups though, a Chicago city group and a Chicago-land group. There seem to be some of the same people in both groups, yet they hold separate meetings? I understand that there have been a few small meetings in the burbs and we didn't have any meeting in the city yet. Probably more people will get involved around David's visit to Chicago. At least for me is almost impossible to attend meetings in the burbs. We can evaluate the situation later... - Daniel > There seem to be two separate groups though, a Chicago city group and > a Chicago-land group.
