I've found that the same concept of a "web" of collaborating components that Alsak pointed out is expressed here: http://www.jmock.org/oopsla2004.pdf and the author are ThoughtWorkers (UK) again! They call it Need- Driven developing and beside the Java examples it seems to me that the idea behind is the same (just the mocking part of rSpec). They advocate the use of JMock as the mocking framework leaving the programmer with the only choice to automate everything with some kind of xUnit. Of course this is the shortcoming addresseed by rSpec. IMHO this is a nice reading to understand BDD concepts. I'll have to miss DHH's keynote. Otherwise, I plan on going full tilt boogie on Rails. Chris ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: jzimmerman at nofluffjuststuff.com Date: Jun 19, 2006 4:23 PM Subject: RailsConf 2006: Final Instructions To: chris.mcavoy at gmail.com Dear Chris, Greetings! RailsConf 2006 is fast approaching and we look forward to your attendance. I just wanted to review a few things prior to your arrival. 1). Make sure and confirm your hotel room with the Wyndham if applicable- call (847-297-1234). Use this phone number as well when arriving at O'Hare for Wyndham Shuttle pickup at the airport. 2). Venue Address: Wyndham O'Hare 6810 N.Mannheim Rd. Rosemont, Illinois 60018 3). If you haven't already make sure and join Wyndham By Request - free internet in sleeping room and other amenities at no charge. Go to http://www.wyndham.com/wbr/benefits/main.wnt? for online registration information. 4). Parking is $19/day at the Wyndham O'Hare. So, if you are coming from the greater Chicago area I recommend taking the train to O'Hare and then calling the Wyndham shuttle for pickup. For those of you flying in, there is no need to rent a car. Everything you need (restuarants, convenience store, etc..)is in walking distance from the hotel. 5). Registration will run from 7:00 - 9:00 PM on Thursday evening June 22nd. Late registration will run from 7:30 AM - 9:00 AM on Friday, June 23rd. At registration you will receive a RailsConf 2006 notebook, pen and T-shirt along with your RailsCon 2006 badge with schedule. 6). Wireless internet will be available in the Grand Ballroom and foyer for your convenience starting on Friday morning. Please use the bandwidth as needed. 7). You have the opportunity to purchase audio/slides of RailsConf 2006 while at the conference. The cost is $50 and can be paid either with check(payable to Big Sky Technology) or cash. We will begin processing payment for the audio/slides on Saturday. Note - we will be video taping the panels and majority of the Keynotes at RailsConf. The video portion will be made available for free at a later date via RubyCentral. 7). Starting on Friday morning, a continental breakfast, refreshment breaks and a box lunch including a vegetarian option will be served at RailsConf 2006. Dinner will be on your own with several restaurants available within walking distances as well as the restaurant at the Wyndham. 8). For those of you arriving Thursday, there is going to be a room setup for ad hoc/self-organizing presentations during the day on Thursday, so if people have things they want to present or coding activities they want to organize, they should come and sign up for a slot. The room available is a section of the ballroom. Activities will start around 10:00 AM and go from there. That is it! We look forward to seeing you at RailsConf 2006! Thought I would pass it along. The recruiter, Catherine, is really cool. Feel free to drop her an email if you're interested.. -jason -------- Original Message ------- HI Jason, I found your information online and apologize for the unsolicited email. My name is Catherine Hansen, and I'm a recruiter for the Google.com Engineering Leadership Group at Google. This team is responsible for supporting Google infrastructure as a whole, from systems high availability to software production and the deployment of our innovative products and services. As we continue to grow, we are in need of bright leaders like you to drive the engineering changes on our team. I wanted to see if you may be interested in exploring engineering opportunities with us. We are seeking talented leaders and individual contributors who also have hybrid, and current, expertise in coding, algorithms, and UNIX/Linux networking to join our rapidly growing organization. We also look for experience with internet services delivery and large scale distributed systems. Management positions on this team are very hands-on, so we need someone who wants to remain in the trenches as well as serve as mentor to a team of our engineers. We have positions open in the US in Mountain View (CA), Santa Monica (CA), New York City, and Seattle, as well as Dublin (Ireland) and Bangalore (India). We could relocate you to any of these locations of your choice. I am enclosing job descriptions of two positions that may interest you. If you feel that any of these positions is something that may be of interest to you, please send me an email so we can schedule a time to talk for half an hour or so. If you are not interested or available, but would like to forward my name and contact information to your friends or colleagues, that would be great as well. Thanks and hope to hear from you soon. Please RSVP at: http://chirb.org/uger/event/show/3 Say the words "content management" in the ears of nearly any Web developer and they will likely frown and complain that most content management systems are too complicated, difficult to setup, or not very flexible. They have good reason to complain. Content management systems are notorious for containing every feature, except for the kitchen sink! Enter Radiant--a light-weight content management system designed from the ground up to be simple to use, while remaining flexible and powerful. It's a content management system that has borrowed much from Textpattern and MovableType while seeking to be more than a simple a blogging engine. Radiant features: * The ability to arrange pages in a hierarchy * Layouts that can be used to apply a common look to a Web site * Snippets that are similar to partials or includes * Pages which are defined in multiple parts (body, extended, sidebar, etc...) * A custom tagging language (Radius: http://radius.rubyforge.org) * Special page-oriented plugins called behaviors * A simple user management/permissions system * Several domain specific languages which make it easy to write plugins In his talk John will talk about the design and discovery process he went through while building Radiant and cover the guiding philosophies behind it. He will also demonstrate installation and setup from a Gem and talk about how Radiant can be extended. You will discover the joys of Radiant's robust domain languages and revel in the ease with which you can create new content. He will also discuss how Radiant is being used on the new version of the main Ruby web site (http://ruby-lang.org) and explain how others are using it. John has been involved in the Ruby community for nearly 4 years now. He has broad experience in Web development and is also an accomplished designer. BARcamp Chicago has finally found a venue and picked a date (15-16 July)! It looks like July is going to be a great month for the Chicago tech community with BARcamp and TECHcocktail (6th July). So an early thought I threw out for a BARcamp project, that I would like to explore with you guys and gals is this: Build a web company, from concept to live-product, during the BARcamp weekend. Similar to the 24-hour dot com event done a while back by some Swedish kids at the Wizards of OS conference in Germany. Take a look at their site for background: http://24hdc.com/ My idea is to take that a step further as a showcase for these things: - the new RAD platforms (RoR, Cake/Drupal/et al., Django/Zope/et al). - the new Business Model for start-ups, Going Bedouin http://www.charterstreet.com/2006/02/going_bedouin.html - Chicago talent, creativity, and entrepreneurial spirit I think it can also be a great way for the tech community to learn about start-up details that we may not all know about being hidden safely away in our job-cubicles. So what I am proposing is that we make 3 teams, PHP, Python, and Ruby, (wheres my perl peoples?), pick an idea or a topic, and build 3 companies. A little friendly competition and exploration of ideas. Does anyone have any interest for this type of a project? Thoughts! Long) Date: Thu, 29 Jun 2006 19:44:51 -0500 Subject: [Chirb] [ANN] Radiant CMS 0.5 - Grindstone Message-ID: <44A47403.8070308@johnwlong.com> Last night I quietly rolled out the first official release of Radiant: 0.5 - Grindstone. This release was a stability release mostly targeted toward making it easy for people to download and get started with Radiant. Radiant now ships with a simple setup_database script which makes it easy to get up and running with one of three default templates. We also made it easy for people to install Radiant via Ruby Gems. WHAT IS RADIANT CMS? Radiant is a no-fluff content management system designed for small teams. It's similar to Movable Type or Textpattern, but is more than a blogging engine. It's a Web developer's CMS with just enough features to make it worthwhile. We've intentionally left the kitchen sink out! Radiant features: * An elegant user interface * The ability to arrange pages in a hierarchy * Flexible templating with layouts, snippets, page parts, and a custom tagging language (Radius: http://radius.rubyforge.org) * Special page-oriented plugins called behaviors * A simple user management/permissions system * Support for Markdown and Textile as well as traditional HTML (it's easy to create other filters) * Operates in two modes: dev and production depending on the URL * A caching system which expires pages every 5 minutes * Built using Ruby on Rails (which means that extending Radiant is as easy as any other Rails application) * Licensed under the MIT-License * And much more... There's even a live demo over on the project Web site: http://radiantcms.org/demo/ INSTALLATION We've worked hard to make it easy to install Radiant. For starters you can download it with Ruby Gems: % gem install --include-dependencies radiant Once the Radiant gem is installed you have access to the `radiant` command. The `radiant` command is similar to the `rails` command (if you are from the Rails world. It's how you generate a new Radiant instance application. An instance application is an application that references the source code which is located somewhere else (in this case the Radiant gem.) So `cd` to the directory where you would like your instance to be installed and type: % radiant . Next create a database for your application and setup the appropriate config/database.yml file. You'll find several examples in the config directory. Radiant supports MySQL, SQLite, and PostgreSQL. Then run the `script/setup_database` command: % script/setup_database production And start up the test server: % script/server Finally, hit the /admin/ URL and you should be off to the races. See the README file in the release for additional details. If you are interested in other download options, visit the download page: http://radiantcms.org/download/. CONTRIBUTORS Radiant wouldn't be possible without the help of some fine people. The following people have made contributions to this release: * Matt McCray * Paul Smith * Scott Walter * Sven Lauer * Tristan Boniver * Chris Corriveau * Ryan Platte * Luis Lavena Thanks guys! If you'd like to hop on the development band wagon head on over to our dev site (http://dev.radiantcms.org/). SUPPORT Perhaps the best place to get support is on the Radiant mailing list. There's a crowd of people there who have been hanging around for over a month now. Newbie questions are welcome!
