Message-ID: <4884CDEB.3070506@hostedlabs.com>
Hey Everyone!
Its time for BARcamp Chicago 2008! Last years was great and this
year will be even better.
A quick intro for those who dont know: BARcamp Chicago as a weekend
long (60 hours straight) technology fest. People call it an
"un-conference" or a "user-defined conference" or a "Burning Man for
coding". It happens once a year here in Chicago and is free to all.
Come give a talk, listen, learn, code and drink.
FYI- BARcamp is not about bar's but a play on FOO=BAR and Oreillys
private camp called FoO camp (Friends of Oreilly) in the Valley.
We are shooting for the weekend of August 15th, but here is the rub.
(like every year) we need to find a venue. Requirements for space are:
1) In Chicago
2) Open for use the whole weekend, 24 hours a day.
3) Allow beer and drinks (most colleges dont).
4) Room for ~300 people.
We have event insurance and can chip in cash if our sponsors are good
to us this year ;-)
And as always, sponsors are welcome. We have no prospectus or ROI or
anything and no set amounts. If you are start-up chip in $50 or
whatever you can spare, if you are further along, help out the community ;-)
Its really about YOU, the engineer, the entrepreneur, the manager,
the hacker, the coder, the artist. YOU the Chicago Tech community.
Come make it happen and like the previous years, have a blast!

Subject: [Chirb] Geek Girl Event
Message-ID:
Chirbers, I thought I would forward this Geek Girl event information
along:
Girl Geek Dinners have been popping up all around the world for nearly
three years. They've been huge successes in Sydney, London, San Fran,
Malaysia, Toronto,...(you get the point). Next stop: Chicago! And just
to clarify, this is not a ThoughtWorks event. It's simply a group of
women (and yes men are invited as well) in IT who are interested in
networking with people in the same field.
The idea is to get a group of women who work in technology together to
discuss their experiences and exchange ideas in a comfortable, casual
environment. The obvious goal of the event is to meet other women in jobs
similar to what you do every day and share knowledge. The long term aim
is to make the technical world more intriguing and accessible to people of
all age, race, and gender. For more info: http://girlgeekdinners.com/
Why am I telling you this?
Well we need some help. If you know any women in technology in the
Chicago area, please reach out to them to see if they'd be interested in
attending. There's no obligation obviously- consider this a user group
that will meet monthly or bimonthly at a selected venue. We have a
facebook page, as well a mailing list to keep everyone updated. I
believe we already have over 30 people interested in attending. Please
feel free to pass this information on to anyone you know who may be
interested in joining us. Also, please let me know if you'd like to
attend or help with organization.

Where: ThoughtWorks office- 200 E. Randolph 25th Floor

Group,
This is a friendly reminder that we have a meeting next week. It has been
awhile since we did something of the lightning talk format. I think it
would be refreshing to hear what more of us are working on. If you think
you could manage a 5 minute talk on something (it can be shorter) please
volunteer on the mailing list! I'll get the ball rolling.
5 minutes on Chipmunk Physics Engine for Ruby.
http://wiki.slembcke.net/main/published/Chipmunk
Feel free to volunteer multiple talks or to split something you can't fit
into 5 minutes into multiple 5 minute segments. We will do round robin
scheduling until we run out of time!
PEACE!

Hi Folks,
I am on the lookout for developers (esp. Ruby) to help us build and
maintain a client/candidate system complete with web apps and document
processing. This position is a great learning opportunity for an up
and comer (who, say, has database or web programming, but is missing
something else), or a great change of pace for a seasoned developer.
There is a real opportunity for project ownership here, and the
compensation, benefits, and gear are all solid. Take a look at our job
description, and feel free to tell anyone you know about us. We are a
salesforce recruiting company on the fast-track, and you are welcome
to take part.

Message-ID: <51ab7bca0807281636g72c75b50l159f0a5592a27d8b@mail.gmail.com>
Hi CHIRB,
I wanted to give a presentation on FunFX to the group in September.
Adobe Flex (http://www.adobe.com/products/flex/) is quickly becoming
the dominate technology for RIAs. I've been using FunFX on an Agile
development project at Orbitz.com for a few months. I've found that
FunFX allowed me to complete the project using Test-Driven Development
in the truest sense: acceptance tests generated from story cards that
can be executed against the Flash application generated by Flex.
Adding RSpec & Storyrunner into the mix, just made everything easier
and more appealing to the business/product owners.
I'll have examples that show the power of the Adobe Flex framework,
and also Ruby tests that show how easy it can be to test a graphical
internet application.
http://funfx.rubyforge.org/
Thanks,
Vasko Zdravevski.

Subject: [Chirb] Drop-In Office Space
Message-ID:
I'm probably dreaming for thinking I can find what I'm looking for,
but I thought I'd see if anyone here has any ideas.
I'm managing a small Rails development team here in Chicago. We're
mostly on the north side in Rogers Park/Andersonville/Evanston. We
all work from home and communicate by IRC, email and phone. But
sometimes we want to get together and brainstorm, use a whiteboard, or
shoot the breeze. We currently meet at Metropolis Coffee on Granville
due to it's good coffee and free wifi. But the lack of whiteboards is
a problem, not to mention the uneven availability of power outlets and
tables.
Has anyone ever heard of office space one can rent on a regular basis
on the north side? Regus offers such a thing in the Loop, but that's
not very convenient for us, and I'm not sure we really need all the
services they offer. I'd be looking for something like two days a
week for three hours each day, access to large whiteboards and wifi.
Am I nuts to believe something like this exists outside the Loop?
Thanks for any pointers,
Troy

You might be able to set something up with the Chicago Coworking

Their space is in Ravenswood (right off of Montrose Brown I think.)
They've sometimes got desk space, and have a conference room which
people sign up for time slots on. It was being managed by Jeff Park
(jeffpark at gmail.com) last time I was there. He's a nice guy and open
to working something out. Jeff's office phone number: 773.583.4960.

Wow! Someone did the CoWorking thing. very cool.. we had talked about
that at the first BARcamp.
When we move into our new office space downtown, we will be offering
some open Coworking space as well (215 w Ohio, the former Electronic
Arts building). Will update when thats available.
We are currently working out of temp office space in the Loop at 210 s
Clark by the graces of Phil Tadros (of metroproper.com and dollop coffee
shop fame). philcoextra at gmail.com - ping him, there is more space on the
floor, although it aint pretty.
The Incubator in Evanston (where I started and live) is now defunct but
a couple of companies stuck around and you might be able to sublet
office space. Not sure how to get a hold of people there but you could
try Rob Jacobi robert.jacobi at arctg.com
