Here are the details about the upcoming Chicago Chapter ACM meeting, for those who are interested. Details here: http://www.chicagoacm.org/ or below.? -- Jon ////////////////// Obama for America: Rapid Response Team presented by: Walker Hamilton, Site Architect for Obama for America 5:30 PM Buffet and Social Hour 6:30 PM Presentation Hosted by: Roosevelt University, downtown Chicago 430 S Michigan Ave, Chicago, IL 60605 Congress Lounge on the 2nd Floor (nearest intersection: Congress and Michigan) Cost (Includes Dinner & Program): Members: $10, Non-members: $12, Students with ID: $5 ?The ability to connect via the Internet to groups, segments, and individuals changes everything.? ? Joe Trippi (Howard Dean campaign, 2004) What happens when technology, the internet and campaigning meet to change our elections and government? Barack Obama's campaign redefined the election process and changed the way fundraising and grassroots organizing works by reaching voters, donors and the media through BarackObama.com, email and social networks like Facebook, YouTube and Twitter. Strategy aside; how did the Obama for America team manage BarackObama.com with its 2 million registered users? How did the team develop a site effective as Amazon.com to amass databases of 13 million supporters and? 4 million donors; all within a two year campaign? Walker Hamilton will present his first-hand experience as Site Architect for Obama for America to give us an insider's view of the technology aspects of a political campaign; how the structure of a campaign vastly differs from the hierarchy of the business world; how political philosophy affects the use of technology; and how you can be part of? a politician's support system in future campaigns. About the Speaker Walker Hamilton, Site Architect for Obama for America, was involved in the design, construction and maintenance of campaign web applications and the BarackObama.com website. Prior to the campaign Walker was a partner at visicswire, a web development and consulting firm based in Chicago, IL; and as technical director for Digital Web Magazine (digital-web.com) where he designed the content management system for their leading online publication for professional web designers, developers and information architects. Walker recently became Lead Information Architect at Paradowski Creative in St. Louis and is a co-owner of Black Point Editions, a fine-arts print shop. It's in git (http://github.com/dchelimsky/rspec) and will be part of the next rspec release. Thanks again to everyone who participated in the dojo last night. For those new to git, here's one way you can grab both branches: git clone git://github.com/dchelimsky/chirb-mastermind.git cd chirb-mastermind git checkout origin/chirb_session git checkout -b chirb_session Now if you do this: git branch You should see chirb_sssion master Enjoy! Whatever failure occurred in the last dojo was mine alone. The software problem was one that spiked in complexity quite suddenly. While that is a natural occurrence in daily practice, combined with the pressure of 5 minute time-boxes and the fact that this was our first time out, that was a mistake. We should revisit that in 6 months, after we've been doing this for a while. In terms of advice, I'd say pick a well known problem, like Uncle Bob's bowling kata, and have everybody practice it beforehand. That takes the surprise out of solving the problem, and lets the dojo focus on technique, which is really the point of the dojo metaphor.
