I'm new to RoR and having some problems getting everything set up correctly. I spent a couple of days trying to get a Win2K install working. Couldn't. On advice from someone who should know, I'm now trying to use InstantRails. Unfortunately, I'm having problems there too. I'm getting an error on starting InstantRails that Apache can't be started. Per the FAQ, I've gone into the Apache config file and changed the Listen and Port settings. Listen is now set to 127.0.0.1:2000 and the Port setting is 2000. The error message in InstantRails.log is: "MySql : Apache cannot be runned : another Web server use the Web port" Help, please?! According to the FAQ, I "can either get rid of the other web server, change that web server to use a different port, or tell the Instant Rails copy of Apache to use a different port." Instant Rails is a one-stop Rails runtime solution containing Ruby, Rails, Apache, and MySQL, all preconfigured and ready to run. No installer, you simply drop it into the directory of your choice and run it. It does not modify your system environment. This release of Instant Rails is for Windows, but there are plans for ports to Linux, BSD, and OSX. The Instant Rails home page has links for downloading and getting started with Instant Rails: http://instantrails.rubyforge.org/ If you already have Instant Rails installed, then be sure to read the upgrade instructions: http://instantrails.rubyforge.org/wiki/wiki.pl?How_To_Upgrade Instant Rails -- Change Log =========================== 2006.01.03 Instant Rails 1.0 RC1 * Reverted Instant Rails Manager to use the file extension associations for editing config and log files and added an Instant Rails preference item to force the use of Notepad.exe (necessary if you have VMWare installed). * Configure SCGI now initializes the dialog with the current settings instead of default values. * Replaced One-Click Ruby Installer 1.8.2 with ruby-mswin32 1.8.4 (which is what 1.8.4 of the One-Click one-click installer will be built upon). ------------------------------------------------------------------- 2005.12.24 Instant Rails 1.0 preview8 * Restored missing log directories in the sample apps. ------------------------------------------------------------------- 2005.12.13 Instant Rails 1.0 preview7 (preview6 was a bad release) * Included Typo 2.6.0 as a sample app * Included RedCloth 3.0.4, BlueCloth 1.0.0, and RubyPants 0.2.0 (used as text formatters by Typo). * Upgraded Rails to 1.0 final * Instant Rails now detects being run from a directory path that containd spaces, issues a warning, and quits. ------------------------------------------------------------------- 2005-11-08: Instant Rails 1.0 preview5 * Upgraded Rails to Rails 1.0: The Release Candidate 4 (aka 0.14.3) ------------------------------------------------------------------- 2005-11-01: Instant Rails 1.0 preview4 * Added mysql\bin to the path in console windows. ------------------------------------------------------------------- 2005-10-27: Instant Rails 1.0 preview3 * Upgraded Rails to Rails 1.0: The Release Candidate 3 (aka 0.14.2) * Upgraded to SCGI Rails Runer 0.4.3 * Added "fxri" to the help menu. * Fixed a problem where console windows were being opened in the wrong current directory. This meant that ruby\bin wasn't being put on the path which, in turn, meant you couldn't execute the "gem" or "rails" commands. * Fixed several minor problems. * Created this change log! Also, added a ToDo.txt file. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I decided to try IR on my second system (a Win2K laptop that I'm using now). It went like a charm. No problems starting the web server at all. Aside from adding thewww.mycookbook.com entry to the Windows hosts file per the readme file, I didn't have to edit any config files. That makes me think there could be something happening as a result of my unsuccessful efforts at installing Rails per your RwRoR article. Or perhaps there's a problem in the diff between Win2K SP2 and Win2K SP4 (the laptop is SP2). Or... Since it worked on this system, I decided to take down the other system and start over. So I in the put the install CD, formatted the primary drive (a brand-new 80GB), and started setup. Long story short... I think the disk controller died. So it may have been hardware-related somehow all along. The good new is, IR is working on this system. The bad news is, now I don't have a great tutorial like your article and I'll have to figure out a bunch of stuff re: getting started doing development on my own. What might make it even better is if IR manager created a simple .cmd file to run RadRails, so that it isn't necessary to make a console, cd into the folder and run it. The only thing it needs is a PATH environment variable to tell it where ruby is. - -- David Morton Maia Mailguard - http://www.maiamailguard.com Morton Software Design and Consulting - http://www.dgrmm.net -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.2 (MingW32) Comment: Using GnuPG with Thunderbird - http://enigmail.mozdev.org iD8DBQFDvAw5SIxC85HZHLMRAmvHAJ9as3dZXO7J/HulHrqoamHNGbKKBQCfXT1U wZU9U4ixFMv6+CUCc66Lp64= =PZed -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- From frankhale at gmail.com Wed Jan 4 13:02:40 2006 From: frankhale at gmail.com (Frank Hale) Date: Wed, 4 Jan 2006 13:02:40 -0500 Subject: [Instantrails-users] instant rails with radrails In-Reply-To: <43BC0C39.9080204@dgrmm.net> References: <5ebbd9b50601040851t48ded36buaa95145b694bc45f@mail.gmail.com> <31d15f490601040923t15c928e8xa343b51ac7659822@mail.gmail.com> <43BC0C39.9080204@dgrmm.net> Message-ID: <5ebbd9b50601041002u4c2a4974n9a3f01a5affcc80b@mail.gmail.com> I edited the use_ruby.cmd file to add radrails to the path and now it's easy to run it from the ruby console. It would be nice to have a button or menu entry in the IR manager app to start it up. What I mean is, RadRails needs to have ruby in its PATH environment (Which it does when in a ruby console) in order to run the script generators and everything ruby. And that's exactly the plan, to develop a Rails app, capable of running in WEBrick that will serve the same function as the current Windows only manager app. What technical challenges would one run into trying to create an > Instant Rails that would run on linux? Would it be a matter of just > setting up the same sorts of scripts that set the path's correctly and > such? It's a bit more involved than that as all of the dependencies, Apache, Mysql, the bindings, etc. have to be built for those systems as well as have all of the scripts ported to allow it to be used in the same manner. But this is exactly the plan, and something I should begin working on very shortly! Ooh!" How about getting Trac to play nice with IR? I've got Trac running fine using the Apache2Triad all-in-one WAMP system, http://www.apache2triad.com. However, I can't help thinking I'm viotating DRY by having 2 WAMP systems running (worse, they cant be run concurrently). It looks like Trac needs Python plus a couple of extra libraries to run. It doesn't sound too unreasonable to think that these can all be put into the InstantRails folder in keeping with the all-in-one philosophy. So, how 'bout it? How cool would it be to have an IDE, a project management system, *and* the app server available all in one package? I come seeking guidance, i.e. has anyone tried and/or succeeded in getting this setup to work. If no, I'd be happy to jump in and give it a shot. Figured I'd throw it out to you all first before I go reinventing the wheel. Thanks. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Message-ID: <31d15f490601050900x10548f91l1ac81eec50e5ffdf@mail.gmail.com> This release is unchanged from release candidate 1 other than to update the version number in the Help>>About dialog. Instant Rails is a one-stop Rails runtime solution containing Ruby, Rails, Apache, and MySQL, all preconfigured and ready to run. No installer, you simply drop it into the directory of your choice and run it. It does not modify your system environment. This release of Instant Rails is for Windows, but there are plans for ports to Linux, BSD, and OSX. The Instant Rails home page has links for downloading and getting started with Instant Rails: http://instantrails.rubyforge.org/ If you already have Instant Rails installed, then be sure to read the upgrade instructions: http://instantrails.rubyforge.org/wiki/wiki.pl?How_To_Upgrade ============================ Instant Rails -- Change Log ============================ 2006.01.05 Instant Rails 1.0 final * Updated version in Help>>About dialog box to "1.0 final". 2006.01.03 Instant Rails 1.0 RC1 * Reverted Instant Rails Manager to use the file extension associations for editing config and log files and added an Instant Rails preference item to force the use of Notepad.exe (necessary if you have VMWare installed). Here's what happened... Up to preview7 IR used the the 1.8.2 version of the One-Click Installer. I wanted the 1.0 release to include the new 1.8.4 version of the One-Click Installer, but it won't be ready for a few more weeks. Starting with preview8, I started using 1.8.4 of ruby-mswin32 instead (the One-Click Installer is based on ruby-mswin32 with many extensions added, notably the ones you miss). This is temporary. Once the 1.8.4 One-Click Installer is released, we will release Instant Rails 1.1 with it included. In the meantime, as long as you don't mind using version 1.8.2 of Ruby you can simply use preview7, but copy in the InstantRails.exe executable from the 1.0 final release. I'll post this to the FAQ, point other people to this when they ask the same question. Curt -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Just stating the obvious, but the socket is a faster alternative to TCP/IP where both the client and mysql server are on the same machine. Works through named pipes on windows. Probably irrelevant until you're out of the TSTTCPW stage. This is important because if you edit it directly, it will get overwritten later on. Other than that, I don't know the answer to your question (I'm not an Apache expert). There is nothing special about the Apache included in Instant Rails, so figuring out you problem would be no different than any other Apache installation. There are others on the ML that know more about Apache than I do, so perhaps they can help. Any of the Apache support forums out there might be able to help (you could even try the Rails mailing list). Curt PS Did you check the Apache error log to see if it had any useful info? -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... It looks like the GUI manager app we inheririted when we forked the EasyPHP project uses an API call that doesn't exist on Windows NT. We are rewriting the manager app in Rails for version 2, so that might stand a better chance of working on NT. But you'd have to wait a while for that, and still no guarantees as that is not really a target. If you want to run the 2 webapps you could use Webrick by opening a ruby console, changing the directory to either webapp and then typing: ruby script/server Webrick will start on port 3000 Load up your browser of choice and go to the url: http://localhost:3000/ Of course with that said the information I wrote does not help you with Apache or SCGI (sorry for that). SCGI is a (better, IMHO) replacement for fastcgi. It loads the rails environment and application into a always running process, which speeds up the response time over plain CGI. Essentially, a SCGI Mount point is set up on /dispatch.fcgi and then any requests that need to be handled by rails gets mapped onto that point via mod_rewrite. Unlike Fastcgi, the file, "dispatch.fcgi" is not actually run, but rather the request is proxied to the running SCGI process. The Webrick server which is used in most tutorials is a simple webserver written in Ruby, which also has the rails environment already loaded. Howver, it isn't really designed for production level hosting, which is where the Apache/[fastcgi/scgi/mod_ruby] part comes in. The best reason for doing this IMHO is that SCGI can run as a different user than apache, which makes for much better security. And with Instant rails, it is all pretty much set up for you, so you can do development in it. OTOH, several editors, like radrails, need to start up the webrick server so they can do debugging. In that case, simply stop the apache process, and ignore the scgi server. - -- David Morton Maia Mailguard - http://www.maiamailguard.com Morton Software Design and Consulting - http://www.dgrmm.net -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.2 (MingW32) Comment: Using GnuPG with Mozilla - http://enigmail.mozdev.org iD8DBQFDxrG7SIxC85HZHLMRAqt7AJ0cY0bjBXit5LrWncgCsKoKIllKfwCcCQ9s rz2ddTe+H6+PxHejXassAOM= =cCAj -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- From maxsteel at gmail.com Thu Jan 12 15:30:50 2006 From: maxsteel at gmail.com (MaxSteel) Date: Thu, 12 Jan 2006 14:30:50 -0600 Subject: [Instantrails-users] Bug or problem or not? I just installed it and was playing around with the cookbook app (this is what led me here, I want to create a simple online cookbook for my family). I went and edited one or the default recipes "Hot Chips" just to play around. I noticed that in the "Instructions" field that there was 4 spaces preceeding the text ( " Sprinkle hot-pepper sauce on corn chips." I took out the spaces and saved it. Went back in and those spaces were there again. This time I just saved it and went back in, and now 8 spaces were there: " Sprinkle hot-pepper sauce on corn chips." I tried it in firefox and ie to see if it was a browser issue, and both do the same. I looked at the edited data in myphpadmin, and the spaces were also there. Does anyone know what's causing this? I can see this to be a pain for other apps. Thanks in advance... -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
