Message-ID: There were a number of reasons we moved it, but it mostly came down to the proximity of RubyNation to Raleigh (4 hours away and 1 week before). I'm also moving from Knoxville to Huntsville in about a month, so it made more sense to move it there if we were going to move it. Sorry to move it out of easy driving distance for you. :( Nowhere else closer made any sense, and I think moving it to a more central location is, if anything, a good experiment to see if attendance from Atlanta, Birmingham, Nashville, and Huntsville equal what we got from the *VA areas last year. Next year we'll probably move it back, with the possibility of ping-ponging year to year or something. --Jeremy -- http://jeremymcanally.com/ http://entp.com Read my books: Ruby in Practice (http://manning.com/mcanally/) My free Ruby e-book (http://humblelittlerubybook.com/) Or, my blogs: http://mrneighborly.com http://rubyinpractice.com From redinger at gmail.com Mon May 5 09:08:52 2008 From: redinger at gmail.com (Christopher Redinger) Date: Mon, 5 May 2008 09:08:52 -0400 Subject: [raleigh.rb] hoedown in alabama? The Ruby Hoedown, the southeastern regional Ruby conference, is happening again this year! This year's conference, hosted by Hsv.rb and sponsored by Engine Yard, will be happening on August 8th and 9th at the University of Alabama, Shelby Hall in Huntsville, AL. Without further adieu, we have three really important announcements for you today: First, two keynotes have graciously accepted our invitation to speak: David A. Black and Chris Wanstrath. As a director of Ruby Central and author of Ruby for Rails, David A. Black has established himself as a pillar of the Ruby community. You'll know Chris Wanstrath as one of the Err Free guys and the author of Ambition, cache_fu, and sake. More recently Chris has been active as one of the developers of GitHub. We're really excited to see what these two luminaries can bring to the conference. Second, while our invited speakers will do a great job book-ending the conference, the real meat will come from the community. Enter the Ruby Hoedown 2008 Call for Participation! We're asking you, regular Ruby folks of all types and stripes, to propose talks about topics you're passionate about. You can find all the details at http://www.rubyhoedown.com/cfp.html, but just so you know, we have room for about five full-length talks and eight lightning talks (with possibility for more of each!), and competition is expected to be fierce. You have until midnight EST on June 2nd to get your proposal in to us, but the earlier the better. So again, head on over to http://rubyhoedown.com/cfp.html, read up on the details, and get us your proposal ASAP! Lastly, we've just opened early registration. If you register now, you can save $50 off the registration price (with a ticket price of $149)! Jump on this great deal while it lasts (until June 2nd, if you must know) by going to our registration site: http://rubyhoedown.eventwax.com/ruby-hoedown-2008/register With David and Chris and the great proposals we expect from the community, the 2008 Ruby Hoedown is shaping up to be an excellent conference. We give everyone 6.25 x 10 hours max to commit to and run the typical sprint to convergence. These tasks are taken from any number of input locations -- PM system, bugzilla, other project spreadsheets. You want the migration to be using a model which is 'frozen' to a particular point in the code history. This all works because of Ruby's name scoping. The Site active record class defined above is really MyMigration::Site, and a reference to Site inside the migration will resolve to this because it will be found before ::Site which is the 'real' model class. And "bare-bones" includes what's needed for the migration. That can include methods as well, useful, for example, if a migration is doing data manipulations rather than or in addition to schema changes. Methods used here are typically "cut and paste" from the 'real' model, although in some cases they might be just for the purposes of the migration itself. Keep in mind that there is often a clarity/performance tradeoff in doing data migrations in AR-Ruby vs. direct SQL, which may or may not be an issue if you're dealing with a massive amount of data. -- Rick DeNatale My blog on Ruby http://talklikeaduck.denhaven2.com/ From seancribbs at gmail.com Sat May 10 16:56:44 2008 From: seancribbs at gmail.com (Sean Cribbs) Date: Sat, 10 May 2008 15:56:44 -0500 Subject: [raleigh.rb] Favor fulfilled Message-ID: <48260C0C.7040707@gmail.com> Thanks to everyone who responded, I've found someone to go look at the unit for me! Friday, May 16, 2008 - Champps @ Streets at Southpoint Message-ID: <4827B7D3.6080900@cpphacker.co.uk> Hi all, just thought some of you might be interested in this. There's this new idea floating around, known as "Startup Drinks." The idea is pretty simple... get people who are interested in startups together to drink, eat, be merry, and share ideas, info, war-stories, or whatever regarding STARTUPS. See: In the specific case of the Triangle, a number of people in this area have talked about wanting to do more to help build the "startup community" in the area. This is one more way to get involved and work towards that goal. So we'll meet for the first time, this coming Friday, at the Champps at Streets at Southpoint in Durham. That's a relatively central Triangle location and is probably a decent compromise on location. If people want to arrange a different venue for future events, we can talk about that Friday. Hope to see you all there. The third edition is in beta right now. http://pragprog.com/titles/rails3/agile-web-development-with-rails-third-edition I find PeepCodes pretty helpful. You can get them at $9 per episode, or get one of the bundles if you want to get more than one. He's got some specifically geared towards learning Rails. http://peepcode.com/ I've heard great things about the Pragmatic Studios Rails course, the next one is scheduled for "Summer 08" http://pragmaticstudio.com/rails/ The Ruby Brigade has a monthly hack night where you could just drop by and hang out with some knowledgeable Rails gurus while playing around on your own app. Many are willing to show you things they are working on. It's a great way to pick up tips. One thing to watch out for if you follow tutorials on the web is to make sure it is fairly recent. Rails 2.1 is imminent. So make sure at the very least whatever tutorial you are following is at 2.0.2. It can be frustrating if you type in an example exactly as it's shown and it's not working on your version of Rails. The app will be the next generation textbook, with courses, classes, tutorials and lectures that anyone can create and use. So I started teaching myself html, ccs, a little bit of js, and RoR and developing/designing the application as I go along. I've recently moved to the triangle after accepting a full-time job here (I'm a materials engineer by training), so I am seeking someone who could spend a couple hours a day with me developing the app further. Let me know if you're interested in partnering. Thanks, Andrew -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Ah, I see ;) You can achieve this quite effectively with lowpro.js, a library I highly recommend if you are using prototype.js. var records = DOM.Builder.fromHTML('' + choices + '
').select('tr'); That is how I get table updates. And, as an added bonus, here is how to get those new records into an existing table, compatible in IE6,7,WebKit,FF: tableElement.innerHTML = ''; records.each(function(r) {tableElement.insert(r)}); I LOVE programming JavaScript. I'm thinking I need to learn Flex ;) aiwilliams From seancribbs at gmail.com Wed May 28 21:06:29 2008 From: seancribbs at gmail.com (Sean Cribbs) Date: Wed, 28 May 2008 18:06:29 -0700 Subject: [raleigh.rb] using css selectors to query the response of an ajax request In-Reply-To: References: <5b7455190805281233u22b1abd3h3ce0d15ffcf1503e@mail.gmail.com> <94BB5002-E8F7-490A-B8D5-3E87424D8FA9@thewilliams.ws> <5b7455190805281736s66e88457g762a3608c454723a@mail.gmail.com> Message-ID: <483E0195.2020102@gmail.com> > > I LOVE programming JavaScript. Anybody want to help? Half the work is unusual for Rails: the core of the product doesn't make any web pages, and it isn't hosted at Engineyard. Fortune 500 customers install it locally; a background job talks to their backup servers, gathers info, and stores it in a mysql database. The other half is a typical Rails app that lets users access the database. Most of this work is easy and straightforward; a few tasks are more challenging. We'd like you to be able to spend a few days here in Durham getting up to speed; then working remotely is a possibility (though we think it's more fun to be in the same office.)
