From martin.streicher at gmail.com Mon Mar 1 11:03:28 2010 From: martin.streicher at gmail.com (Martin Streicher) Date: Mon, 1 Mar 2010 11:03:28 -0500 Subject: [raleigh.rb] Rails work Message-ID: <5430EA91-0034-4887-BFF4-30C4B24CE474@gmail.com> I have a good deal of Rails contract work coming up almost immediately. Some is maintenance of apps, some is new development. Per my pet peeves and personal standardization, the code uses Haml and Sass, Sunspot, MySQL, Machinist, Clearance, CanCan, jRails, and a few more well-known gems. (If you refuse to work in Haml, don't bother to apply. I hate HTML and CSS.) Anyway, beside that little caveat, I would love to hear from folks that need work or want to shift gears to work more in Rails. Mid- and junior folks are welcome to apply, if you have Rails code samples of your own and are willing to step up to challenges. You need to know Git and have a Github account. Pay rate ranges from $25-$60 per hour, depending on experience. I am located in downtown Raleigh. If we co-work, it'll either be in my home office or at Edge Office. Please send me a letter of introduction, references who can vouch for your Rails work (if you have them), resume, and your pick for Best Picture this year. Thanks. I don't know how it could happen but maybe the .gitignore affected heroku's build and package process. I would try reverting the .gitignore change `git revert a53f9356` and deploying to heroku again. If that fails I would contact heroku directly. Please consider coming out to hear Michael Peters of Plus Three deliver his talk on "Web Security 101". Here is a description of his talk, as listed on the TriLUG website: "Security is important in any programming environment but programming for the web has some unique possibilities and hazards. Most web programmers have little to no training in security and lots of web development is done by people who don't wear a full-time developer hat. Add to this the fact that bad security on a web project can have very public and very embarassing consequences. This talk will walk through the basics of web security without focussing too much on the particular language that you choose (but all examples will be in Perl and PHP). We'll also look at various attack vectors (SQL Injection, XSS, CSRF, and more) and see how you can avoid them. Whether you're an experienced web developer (we all need reminding) or just starting out, this talk can help avoid being the next easy harvest of The Bad Guys." The meeting begins at 7pm and is held at RedHat Headquarters on NCSU's Centennial Campus. Full meeting details can be found here: http://trilug.org/wiki/Meeting:2010_Mar_11 We look forward to seeing you there. Thanks for any suggestions! > Run AWAY! Seriously, this can be the lid to Pandora's box. There are at least three aspects to making something that gives the user the same experience as Google calendar. 1. UI - In some ways this is the easiest part. When I was working at near-time back in 2008, one of my main tasks was a new calendar UI similar to that of Google calendar. That involved several months of work in Prototype and LowPro. The full calendar that James pointed out looks interesting as a start to doing that, although it needs a bit more function to be able to create events, and edit them other than dragging them around to change the times, at least based on the few minutes I played with it. 2. Interchange - You really need to be able to understand and produce icalendar data which is produced and understandable by the major calendar apps used by your users. This is something that near-time needed but wouldn't couldn't invest in, which is what drove me (crazy) to write RiCal. There are lots of nooks and crannies. RiCal does a pretty good job of parsing and producing RFC 2445 compliant data. It's still lacking a database model. 1a. UI - Since we are talking about interchange, there's also the issue of what to do about the UI for features like recurring events. RFC 2445 is overly rich in what you can express about recurrences, and every calendar app has a different UI which supports a different subset. They all seem to understand different subsets which may or may not be a superset of what their editing UI supports. For example some apps understand and properly DISPLAY an event like the US Presidential Election, "every four years on the first Tuesday of November which FOLLOWS the 1st of the month", but not have a GUI way to set it. 2a. CalDav, a follow on to interchange. This requires implementing WebDav and extending it, which in turn, assuming we're talking about a Rails app, requires extending Rails and or Rack to understand the additional HTTP verbs, and then figuring out the rather arcane CalDav protocols. I responded to the very first of Derrick's postings about a month ago and followed through the first round of interviews with the client, at which point I decided the job wasn't right for me. Derrick followed up with me to see how the interview went, and I told him I wasn't going to pursue the job and (more importantly) that the initial posting was misleading because the client was a Java shop and actually wasn't using any Ruby or Rails. Then he asked if I knew where to find good developers, and of course I thought of you guys, but I didn't expect him to post the same job again, and I certainly never imagined he would post it a third time! Especially considering the discussion that took place after the second posting, which he clearly did not read. I wasn't familiar with recruiters and their ethos, but it was overall an unpleasant experience. Lesson learned. Perhaps you've even heard some of the hype around the Nexus One. But what does it mean to you? Check out the next TriDroid meeting on Thursday at Red Hat HQ to find out: http://www.meetup.com/TriDroid/calendar/12552218/ This talk will introduce Android to you (including device demos) and let you know what's in it for you and for everyone. Our sponsor, Apex Systems, plans to provide pizza, so you don't even have to miss dinner to come. See you Thursday! There's a scripting environment that supports Ruby, but that's a far cry from developing apps. Last I heard (September) JRuby was working on making use of the Android platform APIs. I am looking for a ruby loving company based in the triangle where I can contribute to something great and improve my ruby skills. I just recently heard about this group and will be at Tuesday's meeting to meet you all. I'm looking for an internship this summer, and I'd like to get familiar with the ruby-based companies around here. Here's a little about myself: I am a web developer with a passion for creating highly useful and usable applications. I'm currently studying Computer Science at NC State and graduate in 1 year. I enjoy working with people, especially when I can make their day by helping them out. My goal is to work in a great team environment where I can learn a lot as a Ruby developer (web-based or not), and identify a company that will be a great fit for me. I love getting things done. Small, agile team environments are where I thrive. 37Signals' book Getting Real (http://gettingreal.37signals.com - read it free online) is what I live by when it comes to building web applications - especially when it comes to having a purpose and keeping it simple. I believe that short iterations and working closely with the customer is the best way to deliver exactly what they want. For two years, my side project has been a Ruby on Rails project called TheNinthCut, a highly functional anime site that failed for lack of content. Many lessons were learned, and now we're developing a new site using the practices we've learned from Getting Real. I learned to be agile during my work at IBM, working on a team of 4 interns with 2 mentors. I love open source software and try to contribute when possible. Much of my code is available at http://github.com/nilbus , including FreshTracks, a limited functionality prototype that demonstrates usability improvements for the NCSU course registration system. My attached resum? should give you a good summary of my experience and skills. I'm excited to meet you all tomorrow and get to know people from local companies that love ruby and would be interested in someone like me. Message-ID: <59776A3C-33EE-49C4-B6A9-5A78F4431F14@gmail.com> I have a site http://www.lsncharlotte.com that redirects to https://www.lsncharlotte.com when credit card information must be provided in a form. All that works. However... My question is... How do I force visits to lsncharlotte.com to jump over to www.lsncharlotte.com to avoid the problem? Should I redirect conditionally? I have a method in application_controller.rb that does this... def redirect return true if Rails.env.development? return true if request.domain =~ /lsncharlotte.com$/ return true if request.domain =~ /^localhost/ head :moved_permanently, :location => 'http://www.lsncharlotte.com' end However, if I remove the second line or change it to "return true if request.domain =~ /www.lsncharlotte.com$/", then Firefox complains "Firefox has detected that the server is redirecting the request for this address in a way that will never complete.", which I assume means some sort of loop is occurring. There are a number of great changes coming down the pipe in 0.9 that I would love to catalog and talk about. I'd also like to talk about running an open source project in general, lessons learned... that sort of thing. Ideally we need someone with an emphasis on the user interface skills, but an all around Rails developer would be just fine. Either way, you will be hand-coding JavaScript. We believe very strongly in the Rails message and are completely behind the software stack. That being said, we also use Java in the back-end of our application. It would be great if you know Java in addition to Rails, or at least comfortable with integrating the two. We're Raritan, located on Jones Franklin Road in Raleigh ( http://www.raritan.com). The development team consists of four local developers, two remote developers, and a separate QA organization. You would be joining the team on a six month contractual basis, working out of the Raleigh office. The official job posting is on our website: http://www.raritan.com/about/jobs/senior-software-engineer/ If you're interested or would like more detailed information, please feel free to reach out and send me an email. The project is an Agile/Rails job. We've done a lot of the initial development and they are looking to transition some of the development in house. Their headquarters is in the Boston area (Newton, MA). They've already hired a more mature developer who has a lot of software development experience but is fairly new to Rails and could really use a seasoned but energetic Rails developer (preferrably 2+ years of Rails, but anything close to that would be considered) to increase the overall Rails skills. They would prefer a contract-to-perm position with the new developer working with our team (based in Holly Springs) for several months with the intention of transitioning to the Boston area. I just wanted to help spread the word for POSCONN 2010 ( http://www.posscon.org), April 16-17 in Columbia, SC. It looks like they have a pretty varied lineup of speakers, and their ruby/rails-specific stuff (see the attached image) looks strong. I go down to Columbia every 6 months or so and the downtown is experiencing a pretty nice little revitalization, plus it's only a 3 1/2 hour drive. Disclaimer: I do contract work for Palmetto Computer Labs, the company that runs the conference. I can tell you that Todd Lewis, one of the owners of Palmetto and one of the chief POSSCON organizers is the nicest person you are ever going to meet and I would be plugging this conference even if I didn't do work for his company.
